How We Helped Jan: A Story of Warmth, Comfort, and Energy Efficiency

At Green Isle of Wight we’re committed to making a difference in the lives of veterans and their families. One recent example of this is how we were able to help Jan, who we first met at a Veterans Outreach Support event.

After a conversation with us about her home concerns, Jan decided to book one of our home energy surveys. This survey was key to uncovering a few underlying issues that were making her home uncomfortable and costly to maintain.

Identifying the Problems

During our survey, we discovered that Jan’s home was struggling with damp issues and draughts. These weren’t just minor inconveniences but symptoms of larger problems. One major issue was a cracked wall, caused by an old problem with a leaking toilet overflow. This crack was allowing moisture into her home, contributing to the dampness she had been dealing with for some time.

Additionally, we learned that Jan hadn’t been able to service her boiler for over five years. As a result, it wasn’t operating efficiently, which meant her home wasn’t being heated properly, and her energy bills were higher than they should have been. On top of this, Jan was still using old-fashioned light bulbs, which not only consumed more energy but also added to the cost of keeping her home well-lit.

Our Solutions

We were determined to make Jan’s home warmer, drier, and more energy-efficient. With the help of our own funds, we were able to:

1. Repair the cracked wall: By fixing the root cause of the dampness, we helped ensure that Jan’s home will stay dry and more comfortable in the long run.

2. Service the boiler: A boiler that hasn’t been serviced for five years can lose efficiency and become costly to run. By having her boiler serviced, we improved its performance and ensured Jan can now heat her home more effectively and affordably.

3. Provide energy-efficient light bulbs: Swapping out her old bulbs for low-energy alternatives will save her money on electricity while also providing better lighting.

A Warmer, More Comfortable Winter Ahead

These improvements will make a big difference in Jan’s life. Her home will be warmer and drier this winter, and her energy bills will be lower, thanks to the serviced boiler and energy-efficient light bulbs. By addressing the root cause of the dampness and draughts, we’ve also improved the overall health and comfort of her living space.

At the end of the day, it’s not just about fixing things—it’s about making sure veterans can live in homes that are safe, comfortable, and affordable to maintain. We’re proud to have been able to support her, and we look forward to helping many more in the future.
