With Southern Water announcing a 44% increase in their charges for 2024/25 we thought we would share our top 10 tips for saving water…..
1. Fix Leaks and Dripping Taps
A dripping tap can waste over 5,000 litres of water a year. Repair leaks promptly to save water and reduce your water bill.
2. Use a Water-Saving Showerhead
These showerheads can reduce water use without compromising pressure, saving up to 50% of water during showers.
3. Turn Off the Tap While Brushing Your Teeth
This simple habit can save around 6 litres of water per minute. Encourage everyone in the household to do the same.
4. Collect Rainwater
Use a water butt to collect rainwater for watering plants and gardens. This free resource reduces the need for mains water.
5. Install Dual-Flush Toilets
Replace older toilets with dual-flush systems, which use significantly less water per flush—typically 4 litres compared to 9 litres.
6. Only Use Dishwashers and Washing Machines When Full
Run these appliances only with full loads to maximise efficiency and reduce water usage.
7. Use a Bowl for Washing Up
When washing dishes by hand, fill a bowl rather than letting the tap run. This can save several litres of water each time.
8. Insulate Your Pipes
Insulating hot water pipes ensures hot water reaches your taps faster, reducing the amount of water wasted while waiting for it to warm up.
9. Water Plants Early or Late
Watering your garden during cooler parts of the day reduces evaporation, meaning less water is needed.
10. Install Tap Aerators
Tap aerators mix air with water, maintaining pressure while reducing flow. They’re inexpensive and easy to install on most taps.
By making these simple changes, you can save water, lower your utility bills, and contribute to conserving the UK’s water resources.
